GRAN CANARIA AND WESTERN ISLANDS ON ALERT FOR EXTREME TEMPERATURES AND FIRE RISK
GRAN CANARIA AND WESTERN ISLANDS ON ALERT FOR EXTREME TEMPERATURES AND FIRE RISK
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, August 1, 2024 – The Government of the Canary Islands has issued a new prealert for high temperatures in Gran Canaria and the western islands, with temperatures expected to exceed 36 degrees Celsius in the island\'s midlands and summits, and 32 degrees Celsius in the western islands at altitudes above 750 meters. This alert begins today, August 1.

The extreme heat comes in addition to the ongoing fire risk alert, which has been in effect since July 19, and the recent expansion of the coastal phenomena prealert to cover the entire archipelago. The combination of extreme temperatures, prolonged drought, and stressed vegetation significantly increases the fire risk in Gran Canaria and the western province.

Temperatures are expected to peak starting at 10:00 AM today. Additionally, a southern swell may produce waves up to 1.5 meters, impacting currents and posing risks to swimmers and coastal infrastructure. Northeast winds could reach speeds over 60 km/h along coastal areas and in open waters.

Recommendations: The public is advised to avoid going out during the hottest parts of the day, wear light clothing, and protect themselves from the sun. To prevent wildfires, avoid using forested areas, keep zones around homes free of dry vegetation, and store fuels in ventilated areas. In case of smoke or fire, contact 112 immediately.

Due to rough sea conditions, it is recommended to postpone nautical activities and avoid swimming in unmonitored beaches. Stay away from docks and breakwaters during high waves.

The Government of the Canary Islands will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed.
